Licence Requirements
A General Fishing Licence is mandatory for anyone aged 16 or older wishing to fish in freshwater (lakes, rivers, streams) for species other than salmon. A separate licence is required for salmon fishing. Children aged 15 and under do not need a licence.
Season Dates
The 2025 sportfishing season in Nova Scotia commenced on April 1, 2025, and runs until March 31, 2026.

Where to Obtain a Licence
- Online: Apply through the Nova Scotia General Fishing Licence portal.
- In-Person: Licences are available at over 200 authorized vendors across the province, including hardware stores, gas stations, and convenience stores. A list of vendors can be found at Find a fishing licence (sportfishing) vendor.
Regulations and Reporting
- Anglers must adhere to provincial and federal fishing regulations, including species-specific rules, gear restrictions, and bag limits.
- A General Fishing Licence Report Card must be submitted within 7 days after the season ends, even if no fish were caught.
Saltwater (Tidal) Fishing
No licence is required for recreational fishing in tidal or saltwater areas. However, anglers must comply with federal and provincial regulations regarding seasons, size limits, and protected species. Reddit
