About the Program

Pugwash Communities in Bloom (CIB) is a volunteer-driven initiative supported by the Village of Pugwash Commission.
The program brings residents together to celebrate community pride, environmental responsibility, and the beautification of our village.

It is part of the national Communities in Bloom Canada network — a program that encourages civic engagement, environmental stewardship, and the creation of vibrant, welcoming communities across the country.

History

The Pugwash Communities in Bloom program began in the mid-2000s with a group of dedicated local volunteers who shared a vision of transforming Pugwash into a model of coastal charm and environmental care.

Since then, the group has grown to include dozens of volunteers, local organizations, and businesses.
Thanks to their efforts, Pugwash has received recognition at the regional level for its floral displays, creative landscaping, and community spirit.

What We Do

The Pugwash CIB team:

  • Designs and maintains public flower beds and seasonal plantings throughout the village.
  • Supports community greening and landscaping projects in parks and public spaces.
  • Promotes environmental awareness and sustainable horticultural practices.
  • Coordinates the “Adopt-a-Spot” program, encouraging residents to care for specific areas.
  • Organizes seasonal events, clean-up days, and friendly competitions that foster local pride.

2025 Award Recognition

In 2025, Pugwash Communities in Bloom received the Nova Scotia Provincial Award for Outstanding Community Involvement, presented by Communities in Bloom Canada.

This award celebrates the village’s excellence in environmental stewardship, floral displays, heritage preservation, and civic pride — recognizing both the dedication of volunteers and the strong support from the wider Pugwash community.

Who We Are

The Pugwash CIB team is made up of passionate community volunteers who donate their time, creativity, and energy to make Pugwash thrive.

The group also works closely with the Village Commission and local partners, including schools, service clubs, and small businesses that contribute to planting, maintenance, and seasonal projects.

Community Spirit

At the heart of Communities in Bloom is people working together.
Every flower bed, planter, and decorative garden maintained by volunteers reflects the dedication, cooperation, and pride of Pugwash residents.
These efforts not only make our village more beautiful — they strengthen the sense of belonging, inspire visitors, and highlight Pugwash as a place where nature and community thrive together.

Our Motto

“Bloom where you’re planted.”
In Pugwash, that’s exactly what we do.

Pugwash Receives 5 Blooms – Gold Recognition and Special Mention for Friends of Pugwash Estuary

October 18, 2025 — Stratford, Ontario

The Village of Pugwash is proud to announce that our community has received a 5 Blooms – Gold rating and a Special Mention for Friends of Pugwash Estuary (FOPE) during the 2025 Communities in Bloom National/International Symposium and Awards Ceremonies held in Stratford, Ontario.

Pugwash competed in the International Challenge (Small category) alongside Abbeyleix Tidy Towns, Co. Laois, Ireland, and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and was also recognized with the Outstanding Achievement Award for Community Involvement.

Over the summer, trained volunteer judges evaluated participating communities based on Community Appearance, Environmental Action, Heritage Conservation, Tree Management, Landscape, and Plant & Floral Displays.

Judges Susan Ellis and John Lohuis praised the efforts of Friends of Pugwash Estuary, writing:

“FOPE is a volunteer group that has partnered with the Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries & Oceans Community Aquatic Monitoring Program to collect data on water quality, fish species and abundance at several sites around this biologically important estuary. They also monitor bird species for Birds Canada, and the health of fish habitat in streams feeding into the estuary. This is exceptional work and citizen science of benefit to the entire region, and is highly commended.”

This recognition highlights the ongoing dedication of Pugwash residents, organizations, and volunteers to sustainability, heritage, and community pride. Within the context of global climate change and environmental challenges, this achievement reflects meaningful action and collaboration at the local level.
