Pughwash LighthouseThe Pugwash Lighthouse, also known as the Pugwash Point Lighthouse, is a historic maritime beacon situated on Fishing Point at the eastern entrance to Pugwash Harbour and the Pugwash River in Nova Scotia. Established in 1871, it played a crucial role in guiding vessels safely into the harbour.

Historical Overview

  • Inception: The lighthouse commenced operations on August 1, 1871, serving as a navigational aid for ships entering Pugwash Harbour.
  • Structure: Originally, it was a square wooden tower mounted on a building, painted white, standing 44 feet tall, with the light positioned 48 feet above water level.
  • Lighting Evolution:
    • In 1883, it featured a catoptric lens displaying red light seaward and white light within the harbour.
    • Between 1922 and 1941, it utilized a 4th-order dioptric lens with an occulting white light characteristic every 10 seconds.
  • Deactivation and Replacement: In 1962, the original lighthouse was replaced by a red skeleton tower with an enclosed upper portion and white lantern. The original structure was relocated to a nearby farm, possibly in 1961.
  • Demolition: The 1960s-era lighthouse, inactive since 2012, was demolished in November 2023, leading to community dismay over the loss of this historic structure.
